ABOUT US

Labora Shoes has a proud history in South African’s footwear industry establishing the company as a forerunner in footwear

ABOUT-US-PIC

Labora Shoes is a proudly South African family-run shoe manufacturing business based in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.  Founded by Johnny Parboo in 1988, the decision to start his own footwear range was a brave risk.  Using his extensive experience in this industry and well supported by family, Labora Shoes serviced small independent retailers in those early days.  The business has grown rapidly from 1990 with a production run of 100 pairs of shoes per day until today where the factory now produces more than 40 000 pairs of shoes per month.  No small feat in this highly competitive environment…

Labora Shoes has a proud history in South African’s footwear industry establishing the company as a forerunner in footwear.  Their range of shoes has increased to suit the ever changing world of fashion and retail demand.  The factory is adept at quick turn-around on orders and switching production of styles when necessary.

WE BRING A PERSONAL AND 'HANDS-ON' APPROACH TO EVERY SHOE WE WORK ON.

OUR PRODUCTS & FACTORY

A core element in the success of Labora Shoes is the flexibility of the factory team to alternate the manufacturing line from sandals, to wedges, boots or men’s shoes.

With the growing demand on our production, Labora Shoes has invested in new premises.  Phase 1 is now complete and houses a full production line.  Plans are in progress for Phase 2.  The new factory brings new development for the business as it will substantially increase production and the recruitment of additional staff.

LABORA FOOTWEAR SCHOOL OF EXCELLENCE

Labora Shoes are proud of their strategic partnership with the Mr Price Group.  A partnership formed to realize the potential of the business and increase production capacity.

More importantly, this led to a joint venture with the Red Cap Foundation to establish a training centre addressing the lack of skills in footwear manufacturing.  The centre’s aim being to skill up unemployed people in the various processes of shoemaking, from design to finishing

The Labora Footwear School of Excellence was launched in April 2013 with an inaugural intake of 20 excited students.  Working with a non-profit organization in the area to locate possible students from disadvantaged backgrounds, a group of 90 undertook literacy and numeracy assessments tests from which the final 20 ‘graduates’ were selected.

Ultimately, the School plans to introduce a new breed of skilled and semi-skilled workers back into this sector building a new level of sustainability.  In addition, supervisory and management courses are in the pipeline to offer their staff & staff in other factories more opportunities to enhance their own abilities and grow within the sector.  (There are over 12 other shoe factories in the Chatsworth area employing approximately 1500 people – the training centre is a significant investment into this community and the footwear industry of South Africa).

The Labora Footwear School of Excellence has received accreditation as a Training Provider with FP&M Seta.  The first intake of students will graduate with an NQF2 qualification in Closing Processes.

The joint venture between Labora Shoes and the Red Cap Foundation marks a worthy stepping stone in maintaining and building footwear manufacture in South Africa.
